The Newcomer Health Hub

Advocate. Inform. Empower.

Who we are

The Newcomer Health Hub is a resource for community members and frontline healthcare workers looking to treat, advocate for, and empower newcomers to Canada. Although Canada is a global leader in refugee resettlement, we still have room to improve in meeting the unique and complex health challenges experienced by newcomers. We believe that in order to address health disparities we need to recognize that newcomers should not be seen as a single group; instead, we need tailored initiatives for the specific needs of various sub-populations.

We are a group of Canadian health professionals and trainees dedicated to organizing community initiatives and providing evidence-based, culturally competent resources. Our goal is to enhance the interactions between newcomer patient populations and the healthcare system. Through our efforts, we strive to raise awareness about the unique health and social challenges faced by these communities both locally and nationally.

We will be uploading new resources weekly, if you have requests for specific resources please let us know at newcomerhealthhub@gmail.com.

Community Resources

Many newcomers to Canada struggle to access healthcare in a system where the only available resources are overly complex and difficult to access. Likewise, many community members are unaware about how the refugee process works, and about different sociopolitical situations around the world. Our community resources include summaries of current global conflicts for community members curious about the challenges faced by newcomers. For newcomers, we also have comprehensive resources on how to get health coverage, where to find providers, and how the immigration process works.

Healthcare Provider Resources

Although Canada welcomes tens of thousands of refugees per year, healthcare professionals are often unfamiliar with the unique challenges faced by newcomer populations. This gap in education can exacerbate health disparities for immigrant and refugee groups. To address these disparities, we have created resources to equip frontline healthcare workers with the knowledge of how to sensitively and comprehensively treat newcomers to Canada.
